Tell us about your sports & fitness background:
I grew up playing soccer, baseball, basketball and tennis. I did a lot of swimming at one point. That all trickled to a stop about the time I went to college.
How did you first get exposed to Strength & Conditioning? Do you remember your first WOD? How did it go?
I was over near Courage Fitness Durham quite a bit (seeing bands at Motorco or drinking beers at Fullsteam) and was curious about all the activity over at CF Durham.
I can’t remember what my first WOD was, but I do remember getting hooked on the group and coach atmosphere very quickly.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting Strength & Conditioning? (before / after)
I dropped 90 pounds in the first 11 months through a combination of diet change, Strength & Conditioning and other added physical activity (I’m road and mountain biking fairly regularly). In preparation for a mountain triathlon I participated in recently, I also started run training about 8 months ago.
What is your favorite Strength & Conditioning/CFD moment?
Making the move from Bootcamp to “regular” Strength & Conditioning classes.
What is your advice for people just getting started or thinking about starting Strength & Conditioning?
Remember that everything is scalable. Don’t be intimidated by folks who have more experience than you do or seem to always be able to lift more than you or do more reps than you (those folks will always exist) — just focus on learning proper technique and continuous improvement and you’ll go farther than you ever thought possible.
What are your hobbies, interests, and/or talents outside of Strength & Conditioning?
I’ve been an avid motorcyclist for about 20 years. I really enjoy mountain biking and puttering around in my garage. Yes, i’m an old dude and said “puttering”. I enjoy spending time in the yard and my garden as well — landscaping can be a very calming pursuit.
